The mission of Biomedical Chitosan is to produce chitosan of the highest quality*.  Each batch of our chitosan is analysed by NATA accredited laboratories and this information is freely available in our products section below.

Our chitosan is derived from crustacean waste from aquaculture and sustainable wild fisheries.

Low levels of heavy metals – As, Hg, Cd and Pb often total
<0.2ppm

Low levels of ash – often <0.7%

Low levels of total metals – Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Mg, Zn often total <10ppm

Low levels of bacteria – often <20CFU/g

Low levels of protein

Low levels of acid insoluble material – generally <0.2%

No bleaching step

Raw Material

Biomedical Chitosan utilises crustacean processing waste as the raw material for its chitosan products.  This waste is obtained from;

  • Aquaculture farms, and

  • Sustainable, managed fisheries in the pristine waters off Australia’s southern coast

The waste is transported and maintained under conditions that support the freshness of the material before it enters the proprietary extraction process.

Traceability

Because the raw material for the Biomedical Chitosan products is sourced from either aquaculture or sustainable wild fisheries, the purchaser has a choice. Batch identification keeps the respective materials separate during the extraction and purification process.

Those seeking the ultimate in traceability should select chitosan derived from aquaculture raw material (indicated in our products section) as the product can be traced to an individual farm location.

High Quality

It is the goal of Biomedical Chitosan to produce chitosan of the highest quality, with a particular focus on products with low levels of heavy metals.

Biomedical Chitosan uses no bleaching steps during the extraction or purification of its chitosan products so the customer can be assured that there are no residues or by-products of bleaching.

ABOUT US

The two principals of Biomedical Chitosan are passionate about fisheries and aquaculture. They saw

the vast amount of seafood processing waste ending up in landfill and asked what else might be

done with this material.

 

Coincidentally, a new, greener method for producing chitosan from crustacean shells was being

developed in Australia. Acquisition of the rights to use this process provided the means to convert

processing waste to chitosan. Biomedical Chitosan was then formed with the mission of producing high

quality chitosan for use in the biomedical space.

 

After 3 years of experimentation, a repeatable, quantifiable process was developed. A decision was then made to build and commission a scale up plant capable of manufacturing high quality chitosan of various specifications.

 

While researching applications for chitosan they realised its therapeutic and health attributes were due to

several favourable properties:

 

  • bio-compatibility

  • biodegradability

  • low toxicity

  • mucoadhesiveness.

 

They were especially interested in developing chitosan for use in thin film surgical adhesive and nerve and corneal repair.
